This workshop was offered in conjunction with the exhibit, “Not the Camera, But the Filing Cabinet: Performative Body Archives in Contemporary Art,” curated by Noor Bhangu. Gallery 1C03, The Institute for Women’s and Gender Studies, and the greenhouse artlab presented this workshop with artist Matea Radic.
This was a two-part workshop for women and non-binary folks. We learned how to create a looping, gif-style, walk cycle animation. Participants contributed by drawing individual frames that were later photographed and assembled in Photoshop. We then used the Timeline feature to animate our walk cycle.
Matea Radic is a visual artist from Sarajevo, BiH. She lives and works in Winnipeg, Canada. Her work explores the effect of trauma and displacement on the concept of “home.” Through her work, Matea seeks to unlock personal trauma buried in her own subconscious in hopes of reconciling the heavy feeling surrounding her sphere. Matea’s work reflects a constant attempt to understand her place in the world, both mentally and physically. She seeks peace and the allowing of past lives to pass through so that she can be present. She is a hopeful cynic. She also takes her drawings and gives them life in animated form. Her animations are short, wonky and meant to make you feel good in a weird way. Matea has led other workshops in this style and you can view the finished videos on her Instagram (@lovematea).
